The Algiers International Book Fair (SILA) is an annual cultural cornerstone in Algeria, bringing together authors, publishers, and readers from around the globe. Held at the SAFEX Exhibition Centre in Algiers, the event is one of the largest literary gatherings in the Arab world. The 27th edition, held in November 2024, featured the theme « Read to Triumph » and drew an impressive amount of visitors, showcasing over 300,000 titles from diverse genres and languages.
However, despite its grandeur and success in terms of attendance, SILA reflects a deeper paradox in Algerian society: the lack of sustained reading culture among the public, even with the availability of public libraries and literary events.
We can consider it as a big problem especially when you see all the efforts that has been made by the publisher for their new book and new projects, at the end you see people running for accessories like key ring and bookmarks in wood with their name on it and some unnecessary stuff which isn’t related to book at all.
